Project AWARE is a river cleanup project through the IDNR Keepers of the Land. This summer marks the 6th annual cleanup. Project AWARE 2008 participants will float ~90 miles in seven days on the Winnebago, Shell Rock, & Cedar Rivers and remove trash through parts of Cerro Gordo, Floyd, Butler, Bremer, and Black Hawk Counties.
2007 Project AWARE was a learning experience. Last year SWCS’s objective was to educate the 400-some volunteers and staff as to the conservation contributed by numerous agencies and non-profits to the Iowa landscape directly along the entire river route.
This year SWCS is taking a one day RAGBRAI-esque education approach.** SWCS and its partners will host a Conservation Tent along the banks of the Shell Rock River, upstream from Clarksville in Butler County. Details are in the works, and a committee is organizing a diverse educational experience. We plan to offer conservation practice identification, an example of watershed modeling and targeted conservation practices, urban conservation practice demonstrations, groundwater flow model demonstrations, offer bananas, locally grown foods, and post cards. It will be an opportunity for the Society to interact with and educate citizen-volunteers interested in our message.
If any members are willing and able to volunteer at the tent, please let Ryan Gerlich know.
